Reader Profile

This is my reader profile for my magazine that I have created. This shows what the readers that I aim to target enjoy. This will help me to make my magazine more suited to the audience and will help e to include different aspects that would encourage the potential readers to buy it.

Producing this reader profile has helped me to identify what people would prefer to see in a magazine therefore helping met with the creation of my double page spread. I also know that over 50% of people attend concerts so I am able to add a 'win' section on the cover page advertising tickets to a concert. I know that by doing this, it will encourage more people to purchase my magazine.

NME Reader Profile

This is NME's reader profile. I have looked at it and took notice of the different features that are relevant to my magazine in order to make my magazine appear to be at it's best possible standard.
Looking at this reader profile has given me an idea of the questions that I should feature when I am gathering information for my own. I know to feature questions regarding the hobbies and the social status of someone in my survey.

Fonts

These are the possible fonts that I have chosen to feature in my magazine. Some of them would work well and some would not. I do not want to use a large variety of fonts because my magazine would then not be continuous and would not be enjoyable to read.

This is the font I am going to use for the cover lines on the front cover. It is easy to read and looks organized. This would appeal to my target audience and would stand out on a shelf against other magazines as the information would be easy to read.

For the masthead I found a font called 'Plane Crash' on dafont.com
I think that it would appeal to my target audience as it is clear but also looks roughened and dark which is how indie rock is described.

Progress

I have closed my online survey recently and collected the data from it to allow me to create an accurate reader profile that I can refer to when creating my magazine.

Potential Problems

These are the potential problems that I may have when completing my magazine. I present what could happen and what I would do if any of the problems were to arise.

Proposal Form

This is my proposal form for my magazine. It indicates everything I plan to do to create a front page, contents page and double page spread of my magazine.

Consent Form

This is the consent from that I have created and had my model sign. It declares that she is aware of how the photographs I take will be used and it shows that she is happy with how I intend to use the images.

Sub-genre Research

My magazine is based upon the indie rock genre. This derives from the alternative rock genre which is also the main genre for many other sub-genres. Some of these are:

DREAM POP

This sub-genre of music is often described as an atmospheric sub-genre that relies on both melody and sonic textures. It is also often known as 'shoe gaze' music. The artists often use a variety of breathy vocals and guitar chords to create a 'wall of sound'.

INDIE POP

This sub-genre differs from the indie rock sub-genre as it is less abrasive but more melodic. It originated in the mid 1980's in the United Kingdom.

SADCORE

This sub-genre is more calm and the vocals used are often in a lower pitch than other music. The lyrics used are often sad and sang slowly.

BAROQUE POP

This sub-genre is the fusion of classical music with the pop rock genre. The tee has been used to describe harder edged music that have a less commercial use. The music terms use due to the use of string music that comes from the chamber music.

BRITPOP

This sub-genre was more commonly used with bands that are older and have been around for a while. The genre focused on bands who sang with distinct accents from Britain.

Music Inspirations

For my music inspirations, I used Youtube to discover some music acts that fall into the indie rock genre. Below, I have picked the acts that I believe compliment my magazine the most and I have included a video of their music to allow you to hear the kind of music that will be featured in my magazine.

ARCTIC MONKEYS

I have researched the Arctic Monkeys as they are an indie rock band which is the same genre as my music magazine. This band are very well known and this is publicising the music genre. I chose this band due to their popularity and similarity to my magazine which could inspire me to incorporate aspects of the band and the media that surrounds them in my magazine.

ARCADE FIRE

Arcade Fire are another indie rock band that I have took into consideration when planning the contents of my music magazine. In doing this, I have found the main audience that this band attracts and I can now make my magazine more suited to the target audience that Arcade Fire has.

FOSTER THE PEOPLE

Foster The People are a slightly different indie rock band to the other two that are featured in this post. I have chose to feature this band as, due to the slight musicality difference, they have reached a larger audience which allows my magazine to have a bigger target audience also.

Clothing Idea

This is my clothing idea for the model. I will try to make the clothing I use as similar to this plan as possible. The costume uses a lot of dark colours which are often seen on indie rock fans. I have done this so it appeals immediately to the target audience and encourages them to purchase the magazine as they will be able to see that it has been directed to them.

Article Practice

Here is my practice article that I completed as homework and the feedback that I received. When doing my real double page spread article, I will take the positives and negatives from this practice and apply them to my work. I will ensure that any negatives on my original work are not used in my article for the coursework.

Mood Board

Here are two different mood boards that I have created as research for my magazine.
The first board is full go various other indie rock magazines. Doing this has helped me to identify the different features that are often seen in this type of magazine.
The second board is flu of people who like indie rock music. This shows me the typical clothing that the fans wear and also shows may fans are often seen which seems to be at concerts and festivals.

The Briefs

Briefs
When centres choose briefs to offer to candidates, they should be guided by their strengths in terms of resources and expertise. Centres should also bear in mind the key areas: forms and conventions, production contexts, the role of technologies, audiences/users and representations.
The set briefs are as follows:
Print
Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program.
Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style). Maximum four members to a group.
~ All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate(s), minimum of FOUR images per candidate. ~

Aims of the Course

  1. Aims
The aims of these specifications are to:
    • enhance candidates enjoyment and appreciation of the media and its role in their daily lives;
    • develop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of practical skills;
    • explore production processes, technologies and contexts;
    • become independent in research skills and their application.
